Traffic Information

In March 2006 Melbourne will shine in the international spotlight – with an influx of activity that will transform Melbourne over 11 straight days of elite competition.

As with every host city, delivering effective traffic and transport during the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be one of the biggest challenges.

Hosting the Games is like holding the AFL Grand Final, the Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup every day for 11 days straight. The significance of this cannot be underestimated – the operation of the road network will change and the time it takes to get around the city on roads and public transport will increase.

As a host city, Melbournians will need to exercise patience and take the time to plan for things like getting to work, what route we take and deliveries for businesses.

VicRoads 'real time' travel times

Games time traffic arrangements with ‘real time’ travel times for the city’s freeways and highways are available from the Travel Time Information section of the VicRoads Website.

Information for local communities

Many Commonwealth Games venues are in close proximity to residential and business areas. Every effort has been made to ensure that impacts on local communities are minimised. The Victorian Government has provided information directly to local communities affected by Games arrangements.

To help business and residents plan ahead of the Games, detailed traffic and transport plans were released in November 2005 and updated in February 2006.

View the Traffic and Transport Guide at the Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination Website.

To view information provided directly to local communities located near Games venues visit the Traffic and Transport publications section of the Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination Website.
