It is unlikely the world has seen an elite sportsman remain highly competitive at the top level for as long as Armenian-born Australian weightlifter Yourik Sarkisian, certainly not in such a physically demanding sport as Weightlifting.

It is almost 26 years since Sarkisian, representing the Soviet Union, won a silver medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Sarkisian also won gold in the 62kg category at Manchester and will defend that title in the same weight division.

Sarkisian will be challenged, as this division is highly competitive with at least six other lifters appearing to be genuine medal contenders - headed by India’s Arun Murugesan, with Sebastien Groulx from Canada, Chinthana Vidanage from Sri Lanka, Abdul Roswadi from Malaysia, Kamran Panjavi from England, and Cameroon's 15-year-old Bernadin Kingue all medal possibilities.

The women’s 53kg category has been highly anticipated in tonight's evening session with the clash between the famous Canadian Maryse Turcotte, and the sensational young Dika Toua from Papua New Guinea. These two competitors stand out from the rest of the field.

Expect there to be a battle for the Bronze medal between Australia's Nadeene Latif and Syechelles's Clementina Agricole.
