Singapore continues to impress in the Table Tennis competition, featuring very strongly in all the classifications on Day 9, including the Men's and Women’s Singles Quarter Finals, Men’s and Women’s Doubles Quarter Finals and the Mixed Doubles Final.
A Singapore duo is looking very good for the only gold medal match of the day in the Mixed Doubles Final at 8.10pm.
Three of the four Semi Final pairs come from the small Asian nation, with Australia’s duo of Russell Lavale and Miao Miao the only chance of stopping a 1-2-3 finish, when they play Li Cai and Jia Wei Li in the first Semi Final at 2.30pm.
The Men's Singles Quarter Finals will see No 1 seed Singaporean Zi Yang play Australia’s William Henzell. In other matches, England’s Alan Cooke plays Wales’ Adam Robertson, India’s Sharath Achanta plays Singapore’s Xiao Li Cai and Canadian Bence Casba plays Nigerian Segun Toriola.
The battle between Henzell and Yang is a 'must see' match. Henzell is currently ranked No.1 in Australia and he is Australia’s only hope to the Final.
The Women's Singles Quarter Finals also heavily features Singapore players.
Singapore’s Jia Wei Li will take on Canadian Mo Zhang. Li won the silver medal in this event at Manchester 2002 and she was also a semi-finalist in Athens 2004. It is expected Li will defeat Zhang easily and moving to the Semi Finals.
Australia’s Stephanie Sang will be competing against Singapore’s Yan Xu. This is the first Commonwealth Games for both of them and the match between them is expected to be tough as they have similar skills and experience.
Another Australian, Miao Miao, will play Singapore’s Manchester bronze medallist Sharon Tan.
The last match in the Quarter Finals will be between Singapore’s Xue Ling Zhang and New Zealand’s Karen Jin Li.
In the Men's Doubles, top seeded Singaporeans Li Cai and Zi Yang are looking good for the gold medal; their biggest threat will be Nigerians Monday Merotohum and Segun Torola.
Australia’s Henzell and Zalcberg are also in the quarter finals, but they will take on the Nigerians Merotohum and Torola this morning.
The Singapore pair of Cai Li and Xue Zhang are the favourites in the Women's Doubles, although their English Quarter Final opponents of Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley should provide them with some tough opposition.
Australian pair Jian Lay and Miao Miao are also likely semi-finalists, as is another Singapore pair Tan and Xu.
The Women's Singles EAD Quarterfinals will also get under way, with England’s Susan Gilroy, Wales’ Claire Harris and Nigerian Vivian Ozurumba all unbeaten after the Qualifying Rounds.
