The second and final day of the Rugby 7s competition sees 18 games decide the ultimate finishing places of all 16 nations, including the much anticipated gold medal match this evening.
At the Telstra Dome today, Uganda have bundled a plucky Sri Lanka out of the quarter-finals, in an unconvincing 24-12 win.
The African team's game was riddled with handling errors, with a more organised Sri Lankan outfit keeping the opposition under pressure.
Robert Seguya and captain Allan Musoke Senkindu scored two tries each for Uganda.
Musoke Senkindu was happy with the result, and is now looking forward to a semi-final meeting with Kenya.
“After yesterday it was not the kind of performance we expected but a win is a win,” he said. “We have a rivalry back home with the Kenyans and even though they have more rugby history we think we can challenge them.”
In other games Kenya have easily accounted for Niue Island, 21-5, while heavyweights Tonga soundly defeated the Cook Islands, recording a 31-12 victory.
New Zealand withstood an aggressive challenge from Canada to win through to the Semi Finals 24-0.
The Kiwi's precise ball handling and deft running skills were on display once they managed to escape a tenacious Canadian defence at the breakdown and spun the ball wide.
Tamati Ellison top scored for the men in black with two tries, with singles to Cory Jane, and Soseni Anesi, who survived a head clash in the second half. Canada never gave up and continued to chase and hassle their opposition but fell away in the second half.
