After a much publicised lead-up, the action is underway in the Rugby 7s with wins for gold-medal tipped Fiji and an upset loss for South Africa.

The Fijians are odds-on to mount the highest step on the podium, having won last year’s World Cup. But the Kiwis and Aussies have both picked squads capable of causing an upset.

In the first results from the Dome, Fiji started their campaign with a win over Canada, 31-14.

“It’s a good start for us. It’s what we came here for," said Usaiia Daunivalu, Fiji Team Manager. "We had a lot of butterflies and we will settle down in the next game.”

In other matches Scotland defeated Niue Island and New Zealand had a comprehensive win over Wales.

Tonga has also caused an upset with an unexpected win over South Africa (26-19), after a try in the last moments.
