Rugby 7s fans can now look forward to a star studded line-up as England announces its 12-man team for the Melbourne Games.
Gloucester player Simon Amor
has been named as captain of
Games Rugby 7s squad.
England’s coach Mike Friday was forced to cut back the team from 15 to 12 and admits it was a difficult decision to make ahead of the upcoming Games.
"Every one of the 15 players we brought here deserved a place and it was a very tough decision to make," he said.
"Although only 12 of them will get to play we are very much a 15-man squad and the three players not playing will be just as important to the success of this squad as those on the pitch. That's what being a team is all about."
Captained by Simon Amor, the team is set to challenge its biggest rival, Australia, in its home town.
New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens is not worried, believing Australia just doesn’t have what it takes to win gold at the Games.
Tietjens claims Australia has had limited practice before the tournament, ensuring a good medal winning chance for his team.
"You have to be conditioned to play and you've got to select players that can make the transition in a short time," Tietjens told AAP.
Meanwhile, Australian captain Shawn Mackay has been cleared to lead Australia in the Commonwealth Games despite an injury scare.
Australian coach Glen Ella has hit back at comments that Australia will struggle against the top sides after pulling in high profile Wallbies players to boost the team.
"I'm pretty confident that we'll go in and have every chance like every other team," he said.
Player Lote Tuqiri has nominated his native Fiji as the country to beat.
The Rugby 7s competition begins on Thursday 16 March.
