Current World Sevens Series leaders Fiji have announced their initial line-up to compete at the Games. Fijian Sevens legend Waisale Serevi will coach and play in the 17 member squad.

The 2006 squad includes five players from the silver medal side in Manchester, along with Serevi they are Marika Vunibaka, Norman Ligairi, Semisi Naevo and Bill Satala.

Backline player Lepani Nabuliwaqa also returns after serving a six-week suspension for delivering a dangerous tackle at the USA Sevens last month.

Waisale Serevi, a silver medallist in the previous two games, delayed naming his final 12, instead selecting a 17-member squad to prepare for the Games.

"The reason being is that two of our players Apolosi Satala and Semisi Naevo are still overseas at the moment," Serevi said. "It's not that we're undecided.

“At the moment we've got players who have been training, we need the remaining players to come in so we can gauge their fitness level before we name the final 12."

Fiji’s position at the top of the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Sevens Series, and their desire to avenge successive Commonwealth Games losses to New Zealand, makes them firm favourites for gold in Melbourne.

The Fiji Rugby 7s 15-man squad for the Commonwealth Games is:

Apolosi Satala, Semisi Naevo, Marika Vunibaka, Sireli Naqelevuki, Dale Tonawai, Timoci Volavola, Mosese Volavola, Epeli Dranivasa, Bill Satala, Sakiusa Matadigo, Jone Daunivucu, Lepani Nabuliwaqa, William Ryder, Norman Ligairi, Neumi Nanuku, Filimoni Bolavucu, Waisale Serevi.
