Road Events of the Commonwealth Games in your community

There will be six Road Events – the Triathlon, the 20km and the 50km Race Walks, the Cycling Road Race, the Cycling Time Trial and the Marathon – held in and around Melbourne during the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Road Events are free events (except for the start and finish of the Marathon, which takes place inside the MCG) and are expected to be very popular with spectators.

The course for each event has been chosen on the basis of technical merit, the challenges it provides competitors and to showcase Melbourne to the world. For course details and route maps follow these links:

A Road Event booklet has been distributed to 146,000 homes and businesses located on and within close proximity all courses. The booklet provides details about each event, course maps and an introduction to proposed arrangements. All information contained in the booklet is available on these Web pages.

Message from the Minister

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games is an event unparalleled in Victoria’s history. For most of us it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a unique opportunity to proudly showcase our city on an international stage.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games will bring together 4,500 athletes representing 71 nations to compete at the elite level in front of a television audience of up to one billion people.

Competition will not only take place at our world-class sporting venues but also on our streets, in our parks and around our great landmarks – the places that help make Melbourne one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Through a number of Road Events, the Commonwealth Games will come to the streets of Melbourne, bringing the thrill of elite sport to the doorstep of many Melburnians.

We are providing details about each event and course maps as well as an introduction to proposed arrangements for the management of the event.

I encourage you to familiarise yourself with this information to ensure you plan for Games-time activities and make the most of the Commonwealth Games experience.

Planning and consultation

Road Events present many challenges, particularly in planning detailed traffic measures. Temporary alterations to local traffic and parking conditions will be implemented for each event.

Detailed planning for traffic and event operations for each Road Event is continuing.

The Organising Committee for the Commonwealth Games and the Victorian Government are working in full consultation with authorities including VicRoads, Victoria Police and local Councils to finalise event arrangements.

Further consultation will be conducted in partnership with local Councils to ensure event arrangements minimise impacts on communities. Consultation will be undertaken directly with a number of businesses and essential services such as hospitals and community facilities where day-to-day operations will need to be managed in conjunction with event arrangements.

To help businesses prepare for the Games, a series of Business Ready forums will be held in October this year. The forums will outline possible impacts and ways in which businesses can plan for the Games and make the most of the Games experience. This information forms part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to keep communities informed. Further information will be provided as arrangements are finalised.

This information is designed to help you understand the arrangements required to conduct the Road Events, as well as help you plan how to minimise disruption to your daily routine at Games time.

Road Events at a glance

This section provides a general overview of the arrangements that will be in place during the Commonwealth Games. This information will help you plan for Games time activities.

Vehicle access

On event days and, in some cases, in the lead up to events, a range of temporary restrictions for vehicle access and parking on and adjacent to the course will be in place.

Temporary signs will be installed clearly showing what access and parking restrictions apply.

All vehicle access and parking restrictions will be removed as quickly as possible once events have finished and equipment has been removed.

Pedestrian access

There will be pedestrian access to residential and commercial properties at all times.

For pedestrians, crossing the course during competition will be done at managed pedestrian crossings or at the direction of Games staff or Police.

Parking

No vehicles will be allowed to park on the course during any Road Event or Familiarisation Session.

In most circumstances, local streets are expected to accommodate vehicles that would otherwise be parked on the course. In high density areas, alternative parking arrangements are being investigated.

Temporary parking and access restrictions must be observed. There can be no exceptions to restrictions.

Fines will be imposed on vehicles in breach of parking and access restrictions. Vehicles on the course in breach of restrictions will be towed away.

Emergency access

Emergency Services access to all properties will be maintained at all times.

Public transport

Some changes to public transport services will be required as a consequence of Road Events. Detailed information outlining these changes will be available in early 2006 via public notices and the Metlink Call Centre and Website (131 638 and www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au) as well as the official Games Website.

Course Familiarisation Sessions

For some events, there is a requirement that athletes become familiar with the course before the event. The course will need to be established prior to the Familiarisation Session. Road closures for these sessions will be kept to the absolute minimum.

Course set-up

Early in the morning of the event (including Course Familiarisation Sessions), workers will start closing roads to allow for the installation of any event-related equipment.

Equipment will be unloaded from trucks and Games staff will ensure its correct placement.

Race day

During the event you can expect to see some of the Commonwealth’s elite athletes, lead vehicles, athlete support vehicles, motorcycles assisting with the television broadcast, police escorts, race officials, race marshals, Commonwealth Games volunteers, spectators and security officers.

General

Road Events have been scheduled to minimise impact on peak traffic periods and complement the overall scheduling of Games events.

Ongoing planning and consultation with key authorities including local councils will aim to minimise disruption for residents and businesses while still achieving international event requirements.

Resident services

If a Road Event coincides with a local service, such as rubbish collection or home based health or community care, your council or service provider will inform you of how your service will be managed.

Keeping informed

You will be able to get the latest information as it becomes available on this Website, through the dedicated Commonwealth Games Information Line (see 'For further information') and through local newspapers. Then in February 2006, information regarding specific event, traffic and parking arrangements for each Road Event will be provided directly to local residents and businesses.
