Pocket rocket ready to fire

16 Mar 06 07:02
The first day of Women’s Netball features four matches at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

New Zealand will provide tough competition for St Vincent and Grenadines in the second match at 3pm after finishing 2005 unbeaten, and will be aiming for gold.

The New Zealand team will feature four women who played in the Manchester Games, including Irene van Dyke and Belinda Colling. They will be joined by debutante Temepara George, known as the 'pocket rocket'.

The schedule starts at 1pm, with Singapore playing in its debut Commonwealth Games against one of the competition’s toughest teams, Jamaica.

Jamaica, which took bronze in Manchester and is ranked third in the world, will be captained by towering goal shooter Elaine Davis.

England will play Malawi at 6.30pm, with the English side confident of victory. The final game at 8.30pm will be the day’s highlight, featuring 2002 gold medallist Australia against Wales, which finished sixth.

Australia will sport a relatively young and inexperienced team, having lost many players to injury. However, it is likely to gain a comfortable victory.
