Australia has come away with a 4-2 win over India, in the fourth match of the Women's Hockey at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Australia started strongly with a field goal coming from Wendy Beattie inside the first minute of the game. India was quick to step-up their defence leading to a penalty corner conversion in the 13th minute from Asunta Lakra.

India scored again in the 22nd minute with Mamat Kharb converting from a penalty corner to take the lead over Australia. A minute later Australia responded with an equalising field goal from Karen Smith.

With scores level and minutes before half time, India's captain Sumari Tete received a yellow card.

Australia's Rebecca Sanders converted from a penalty corner in the 41st minute taking the score to 3-2.

Australia cemented their lead with a final goal scored inside the last minute of the game by Angela Skirving resulting in a 4-2 victory over India.

"They're (India) a very fast, skilled and quick team. It's the first game down, everything was pretty frenetic. We got a lot of confidence from this game and we're looking forward to our next game tomorrow night," said Melanie Twitt of Australia, describing their first up win for the Hockeyroos.

The closely fought match proved to be a crowd pleaser as fans await Australia to take on Malaysia on Day 2 while India faces South Africa on Day 3.
