The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Hockey competition will run according to the rules of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), and will feature some of the world’s top teams.
Ten nations will compete in the men's and women's events for the two gold medals on offer, with all preliminary, classification and finals matches will be held at the State Netball Hockey Centre.
The competition format will consist of two pools of five teams playing each other in a round-robin tournament, with the two leading teams in each pool advancing to the finals.

For the men, Group A consists of Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada and Scotland, while Group B consists of Pakistan, India, Malaysia, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago.
For the women, Group A consists of Australia, India, South Africa, Nigeria and Malaysia, while Group B consists of England, New Zealand, Scotland, Canada and Barbados.
