Events for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD)

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games features a fully-integrated competition for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD), with 12 gold medals on offer in Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting, all of which will count in official medal tallies.

The competition will be run under the rules of the International Paralympic Committee, and follows the formal decision taken at the 1998 Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly to include EAD events, and a highly successful program at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Australia has a long history of providing all people with a disability the chance to participate in sporting competition and events, as well as giving them the opportunity to develop their skills to an elite level. The Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village in Melbourne will be accessible, incorporating the specific requirements for this population of athletes into the design and thus ensuring a world-class athlete experience.
