Katie Mactier does a golden lap
of the velodrome
Australian Katie Mactier set a new Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s Individual Pursuit and went on to take gold ahead of fellow Australian and champion Katherin Bates.
In the first heat, Mactier, a silver medallist in Athens, clocked 3 minutes 30.29 seconds to break the previous mark of 3:32.46 set by Sarah Ulmer (New Zealand) four years ago in Manchester.
"It was awesome, exciting," said Mactier of her win.
"It was pressure coming into the race, the eyes of the nation were on me. What a thrill [to win] in front of the Prime Minister of Australia."
Emma Jones (England), who returned to cycling five months after she was involved in a hit-and-run accident, won bronze over Oceania champion Alison Shanks (New Zealand).
English champion Wendy Houvenaghel, who was another medallist in the Final, was the second fastest but was disqualified for contravention of a International Cycling Union (UCI) technical regulation.
