England claims record over Meares

Victoria Pendleton sets Games
record to qualify fastest for
Women's sprint.

English sprinter Victoria Pendleton set a new Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s Sprint Qualifying with a time of 11.275 seconds.

The defending world champion broke the 11.452 mark clocked by Canadian Lori-Ann Muenzer in the 2002 Manchester Games.

The 25 year-old, who won the silver medal in the Women’s 500m Time Trial, qualified well ahead of Australia's Meares’ sisters.

Anna Meares clocked 11.700 seconds and it looked like it was going to be the best time of the round. The 22 year-old gold medallist was just 0.025 seconds ahead of her sister, Kerrie Meares, who showed her disappointment by indicating with her fingers how close she was to Anna’s time.

With these unexpected results, it looks like the battle between Pendleton and the Meares' sisters will continue well into the final which will take place this evening.

New Zealander Elisabeth Williams qualified fourth with a time of 11.781 seconds, followed by Fiona Carswell who clocked 11.824 seconds. Scottish Kate Cullen, who won the bronze medal in the Women’s 25km Points Race, came in last position with a time of 11.925 seconds.
