India’s Jitender Kumar in
sensational form with a victory
in the Flyweight 51kg.
Pakistan's Muhammad Nisar brawled his way to a 40-20 points win over Thomas Essomba (Cameroon) in an entertaining, fast- paced fight in the Light Flyweight 48kg.
Nisar took an early lead and continued to get the better of the exchanges throughout the fight. The classy 18-year-old finished strongly to outscore Essomba 17-5 in the fourth and final round.
The second bout for the afternoon in the Light Flyweight division between Omari Kimweri (Tanzania) and Manyo Plange (Ghana) got off to a quick start with Plange taking the lead in the first round.
He looked the stronger fighter as a standing eight count was given to his opponent late in the first round. The fight was stopped 22 seconds into round two in a convincing win for Plange.
The third bout for the Light Flyweight division between Peter Warui (Kenya) and Mohammed Nasir (Wales) got off to slow start. It was a low-scoring first round with lots of movement around the ring.
Round two saw many fierce exchanges in the clinches, with Warui taking a one-point lead at the end of the second round.
Nasir proved too good for the Kenyan southpaw taking a two point lead in the third round before winning the bout 22-17.
In the Flyweight 51kg, Ali Kargbo from Sierra Leone was beaten by Meshack Letsoepa 8-23 and India’s Jitender Kumar had a convincing victory over Pakistan’s Nouman Karin 14-5.
Isho Shiba of (Canada) beat Emilian Polino from Tanzania and said of his win "I think I can get the gold, it's important to win the first round to get the cobwebs out."
Shiba will meet Welshman Matthew Edmondson in the next round. Edmondson beat Leroy Isidore Jnr from Trinidad & Tobago and is looking in fine form.
In the other two Bantumweight 54kg fights, Louis Julie (Mauritius) triumphed over Immanuel Naidjala (Namibia) 26-10 and Abid Ali from Pakistan outscored Gyanendra Kumar 27-5.
Australia’s Luke Jackson defeated Gottlieb Ndokosho of Namibia 17-9. Commenting on his performance, Jackson said "I won the first round, but I didn't do anything we discussed in the dressing room. My coach said he was happy with me winning the round, considering I didn't do anything he asked."
Jackson has received enormous support from “the whole of Tasmania; phone hasn't stopped ringing."
Jackson will face Jamaica’s Nicolas Walters in the next round who was too strong for Trinidad & Tobago’s Christopher Defreitas
"Wasn't a really hard fight,” said Walters. “I did everything my coach told me to do."
"My coach told me it was a really good fight. I'm the Caribbean champion, so I was never really in trouble," he said.
