Lightweights throw first punch

17 Mar 06 04:19

The first punches in the Boxing have been thrown today, with 34 bouts being contested over two sessions in the Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight and Heavyweight divisions.

In the hotly anticipated early contests in the Lightweight 60kg division, Malaysia’s Paunandes Bin Paulus defeated Levan Stewart from the Bahamas.

1998 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Asghar Ali Shah of Pakistan was pleased with his comprehensive defeat of Samoa's Sada Wulf.

“I performed well. We trained very hard in Pakistan for this,” he said.

The evening session will see the 1998 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist Giovanni Frontin from Mauritius square off against Ghana's Mohammed Ayi Bruce, Namibia’s Jatoorora Jingaveta against Lesotho’s Macheli Letuka and Tanzania’s Karimu Matumla against R.M. Upali Bandara from Sri Lanka.
