CJ Bruton of Australia celebrates winning Commonwealth gold.
In true trans-Tasman rivalry, the gold medal playoff in the Men’s Basketball between Australia and New Zealand went right down to the wire - with Australia taking top honours in the final minutes.
Australia went into the match as overwhelming favourites, and at the end of the first quarter had a commanding lead of 10 points, 25-15.
New Zealand staged a gallant fight back in the second quarter, and went into the half time break with a one point advantage and a score-line of 37-36.
Scores were level at the end of the third quarter and for most of the final quarter New Zealand held on to a marginal lead, looking as though they would walk away with the match.
Both teams played solid defence games, and demonstrated a hunger for the ball.
With five minutes remaining and in a highly pressurised situation, Australia rallied and capitalised on some late errors, managing to steal the match and the gold medal 81-76.
