Barbados has taken a step up the ladder on the international Basketball stage after beating Scotland by 10 points in the Men’s Classification match, to decide fifth place

The team dominated the match after quarter-time and ran out winners, 73-63.

Scotland’s poor shooting was a major factor in its loss, with a disappointing 30 per cent success rate from the field.

Scotland’s cause wasn’t helped when key point guard Laurie Costello, who has trained with the Australian National Basketball League side Melbourne Tigers, limped off the court in the opening minutes with an ankle injury.

South Africa has also had a successful day, winning its first match of the Games by defeating India in the play-off for seventh.

The South Africans withstood a spirited second half fight back from India, to win an entertaining match 65-59.

South Africa, who had already lost two close games in the tournament, showed poise under pressure in the final few minutes.

Neo Mothiba, one of South Africa’s stars of the tournament, shot a game high 25 points, including 11 in the third quarter, and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Point guard Patrick Engelbrecht was confident the Games experience would serve to improve the standard of South African basketball.

"This is the highest level of Basketball our team has played, and we'll gain many great experiences,'' he said.
