Basketball comp shapes up

19 Mar 06 22:22

Australia is comfortably placed for the remainder of the Women's Basketball competition after soundly defeating England in their Preliminary clash, 95-43.

In the other women's match, Nigeria overcame a slow start to convincingly defeat Malta, 86-44, and will now play New Zealand at Bendigo, after the Kiwis easily accounted for Malaysia, 113-56.

New Zealand’s captain Donna Loffhagen, who has played in two previous Commonwealth Games with the national team, has been a lead player in the tournament with an average 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

New Zealand's other key players were Lisa Wallbutton with 21 points and Angela Marino with 18.

Nigeria’s best player Funmi Objelabi has scored 21 points in the match against Malta. Nigeria’s captain Mercy Okorie scored 7 points while other team mates Rashidate Saqiq, Mobolaji Akiode and Chioma Udeaja scored 18, 13 and 11 respectively.

New Zealand is considered a strong medal chance, and will be keen to overcome the eager Nigerians in the Final preliminary Round match up.

The winner of the Nigeria v New Zealand game will play England in the semi finals, while the loser plays Australia.

In Men’s basketball, Nigeria will start favourites in a battle for a Semi Final berth against a Scottish side that has struggled in the Men’s Basketball tournament so far.

The competitive Nigerians are the world’s 27th ranked team. They easily defeated India 113-84 in their first match.

The Scots were blown away by Australia in their opening Pool A match before scraping home by 10 points against India in Geelong on Day 4. They will be out to cause an upset in their final match of the Preliminary Rounds at Bendigo Stadium.

England, with one victory and one defeat to its name so far, has also set its sights on making the Semi Finals from Pool B. The England will take on a South Africa side at Ballarat which lost both its previous games, to New Zealand and Barbados.
