The world’s fastest man, Asafa Powell, widely tipped to deliver one of the highlight performances of the Games, has arrived in Melbourne. Members of Kenya’s Commonwealth Games team have made good use of their final outings before heading to Melbourne. The star-studded line-up for the Athletics competition has been given another boost, with Olympic 400m gold medallist Tonique Williams-Darling confirming she will chase Commonwealth gold. Trinidad and Tobago’s Athletics challenge will be spearheaded by a powerful men’s sprint contingent, out to run down the world’s fastest man, Asafa Powell, and challenge for relay gold. English sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis has blitzed a half-century-old MCG stadium record set by Bobby Morrow with a 10.22 seconds win in the 100 metres in a warm up for the Games. England’s fastest men will get a chance to warm-up against their Australian rivals in a sprint battle set to welcome the return of athletics to the MCG for the first time in 50 years. British Athletics great Daley Thompson has been called in to help inspire an experienced New Zealand Track and Field team. Australia’s largest ever Athletics team, comprising 123 athletes in total, will head to Melbourne in March looking for Games gold on the Track and Field. More than 100 Athletes are expected to be named for the Commonwealth Games Athletic's squad this week, following the last day of selection trials in Sydney.
