Idowu surprises himself with gold

England’s Phillips Idowu has taken out the Men’s Triple Jump Final with a season best jump of 17.45 metres.

"I'm surprised with myself," said Idowu, "All the work I've done this year has paid off."

South African Khotso Mokoena earned himself the silver medal with a throw of 16.95m, a tantalising 50 centimetres behind Idowu. 

Alwyn Jones of Australia rounded out the top three, with a jump of 16.75 metres.

"I'm shocked, I didn't expect it. The crowd is absolutely amazing, it's indescribable," said an elated Jones.

Season bests were also recorded by Andrew Murphy of Australia and LeJuan Simon of Trinidad and Tobago, while Jamaican Wilbert Walker recorded a personal best of 16.33m.
