In a major upset, Mozambique’s four-time World Champion Maria Mutola has been beaten in the Women’s 800m Final.

Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei claimed gold in 1:57.88, with silver going to Jamaica’s Kenia Sinclair in a time of 1:58.16. Mutola ran third to claim bronze.

"The world indoor was very difficult 10 days ago but I'm a little bit disappointed," said Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medallist Mutola.

"I was slow today but I've got to accept that."

Jepkosgei accelerated in the last 50m to overtake Mutola who did not have the power to challenge. Second placed Sinclair also managed to sneak ahead with only 0.61 of a second separating silver from bronze.

"It's great to win, to be a gold medallist, especially competing with people more experienced than me," said Jepkosgei.

Jepkosgei is ranked 13th in the world for this distance and her personal best of 1:57.82 was achieved in August 2005 in Italy.

Sinclair trains in Florida, USA at the Nike Club and managed a personal best time for the 800m in Italy in July with 1:58.88.

Mutola was defending her title from the Manchester Games, where she recorded a win in 1:57.35. At the Athens Olympics she came fourth, before improving at the Sydney Games in 2000 to take gold in a time of 1:56.15.
