Commonwealth Hammer
Champion Stuart Rendell.
Australia’s Stuart Rendell has won the Men’s Hammer Throw in a Games Record breaking distance of 77.53m with Canadian James Steacy throwing for silver at 74.45m and South Africa’s Christiaan Harmse winning bronze with 73.81m.
The Australian's second attempt resulted in the Games Record throw, a feat he was unable to beat in his final four attempts.
"It's been a long time coming. It helped erase the nightmare of Manchester. I'm stoked," said the Athletic journeyman Rendell.
Rendell, a school teacher from Canberra, recently came first in the Hammer Throw at the Australian Championships. At the Manchester Games, he was fourth in this event with a distance of 67.51m. His personal best throw of 79.29m is the Australian Hammer Throw Record.
"I can't wait to get back to school next week," said Rendell.
Rendell attributes his medal success to a pair of lucky black socks he always wears when competing.
