Real drama in the Relay

24 Mar 06 10:49

The Jamaican team has qualified fastest for the Final of the 4x100m Relay in 38.52 seconds, after a dramatic round of heats.

In Heat 1, hopes were dashed when Nigeria took a fall, and Trinidad and Tobago dropped the baton. New Zealand qualified fifth for the Final with a time of 39.04 seconds. Mauritius qualified in sixth position overall and Antigua and Barbuda snuck into the top eight.

It was disappointment for the English team in Heat 2, when the team lost ground after the final baton exchange faltered. Instead it was Canada who crossed the line first, qualifiying third fastest in 38.86 seconds. South Africa also made it through to the Final.

The Australians were dominating Heat 3 until 'the world's fastest man' Asafa Powell of Jamaica took the baton in the final leg. The Jamaican team were more than five metres behind until Powell powered home to give his country the fastest qualifying time. Ghana has also progressed to the Final.

The teams racing in Saturday night's Final are Ghana, Jamaica, New Zealand, Mauritius, Canada, South Africa, Antigua & Barbuda and Australia.
