gold in the Men's Seated Discus
Throw EAD.

The final of the Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) Men's Seated Discus has been decided after a massive throw from Jamaican Tanto Campbell of 34.48 metres in his second attempt.

Canada’s Jacques Martin took second with a season-best throw of 32.28m. Taking bronze was India’s Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan with a throw of 29.88m.

In Men’s 200m EAD T46, Nigerian Godwin Mbakara was ranked first after the preliminary round with a result of 22.76.

A happy Mbakara said “It was a successful race.”

Australia’s Olympic silver medallist Heath Francis finished second with 22.80, while Vitalis Lanshima took third place.

In the Women’s 800m first round, Scottish Susan Scott qualified fastest in 2:02.85. Games record holder, Mozambique’s Maria Mutola finished second with 2:03.01, followed by Kenya’s Janeth Jepkosgei in 2:03.24.

Mutola is the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallist in this event.

Jamaican Chris Williams and Mauritius’ Stephen Buckland, competing in the same heat, topped the list of qualifiers going into the second round of the Men's 200m.

Of the eight heats, current world number five, Williams, recorded the fastest time of 20.49 seconds.

Australian hopes, Patrick Johnson and Daniel Batman, are safely through to the next round after winning their heats in 20.74 and 20.86 respectively.

Cydonie Mothersill, from Cayman Islands, has produced an impressive performance to be the fastest qualifier heading into the semi-final for the Women's 200m.

Mothersill ran 23.11 seconds in the last of four heats to blitz rivals.

Current Olympic champion Jamaican Veronica Campbell had little more than a training run in her heat, clocking the second fastest time of 23.17 with Ghana's Vida Anim and Australian, Crystal Attenborough, safely through.

Australia's Kylie Wheeler has won the Long Jump Event of the Women's Heptathlon.

Wheeler stunned her rival and competition leader Kelly Sotherton of England with her final jump of 6.52m and earned a much needed 1014 points. Wheeler sits third on the points table with 4715.

Sitting in second place on the leader's board is Canada's Jessica Zelinka with 4745 points. Zelinka will need to win the next two events, Javelin and 800m to take home the gold or hope Sotherton does not finish well.

In Men’s 400m Hurdles semi-finals, South African Alwyn Myburgh qualified fastest.

“It went according to plan. I worked hard. I did my job, which was to get in early,” Myburgh said.

Jamaican Kemel Thompson took second, finishing in 48.71 seconds and Australia’s Brendan Cole moved to the final safely with a time of 49.36.

In the Women’s Long Jump, Australia’s Bronwyn Thompson and Kerrie Taurima moved to the next round.

Olympian Thompson jumped 6.71m, which positions her as favourite..

“The MCG is just amazing, I felt strong, I felt light, there’s so many girls out there who could win this event, I’m going to have to be right on my game,” Thompson said.

The Manchester gold medallist Jamaican Elva Goulbourne qualified second with 6.55m. England’s Jade Johnson jumped 6.52m.

Australia's Jana Pittman has confirmed her status as gold medal favourite with a comfortable heat win to qualify fastest for the Women's 400m Hurdles Final.

The 2003 World Champion cruised home in 55.06 seconds to finish well clear of Scotland's Lee McConnell (55.68) and England's Nicola Sanders (55.76).

Pittman’s nearest challenger appears to be Englishwoman Natasha Danvers Smith (55.47) who trounced her rivals in the opening heat.

Track and Field competition runs until 25 March.
