Dream night at the MCG

Dreams came true tonight at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as the Commonwealth's best athletes competed, producing some outstanding performances.

Ignisious Gaisah of Ghana was triumphant in the Long Jump leaping 8.2m. Gable Garenamotse of Botswana came second, with Australia's Fabrice Lapierre taking bronze.

In the High Jump, Mark Boswell from Canada has jumped 2.26m on his first attempt at that height to claim gold. On his third attempt, Martyn Bernard of England also jumped 2.26m and was awarded silver. Ioannou Kyriacos from Cyprus had to settle for bronze, with a jump of 2.23m.
 
In the Women's Shot Put, New Zealand's Valerie Vili celebrated, after her throw of 19.66 landed her a Games record and the gold medal. Nigeria's Vivian Chukwuemeka claimed silver with a distance of 18.25 and Cleopatra Borel-Brown of Trinidad & Tobago claimed the bronze with a throw of 17.87.

Track and Field competition runs until 25 March.
