Anju Bobby George comes to Melbourne the world’s 4th highest ranked long-jumper.
A very experienced and talented group of athletes will compete in the Women's Long Jump qualifying rounds where Jamaica's Elva Goulbourne is a strong contender to win.
Goulbourne took out the gold medal in this event during the 2002 Manchester Games with a jump of 6.70m.
India's Anju Bobby George will also be keen to improve on her performance at the Manchester Games where she won bronze for this event.
Experienced Manchester Games silver medallist Jade Johnson of England will want to add to her medal collection and could take out gold.
Bronwyn Thompson, representing Australia, should be watched in this event. Thompson’s lay off for over a year in 2004 due to injury has not hampered her ability to win and she has enjoyed a strong year so far. With a personal best of 7.00m she may feature on the podium.
Australian Kerrie Taurima won last year's Australian Championships and will be a worthy competitor.
Veteran competitor in this event, Chantal Brunner of New Zealand, is among the field's most experienced. Brunner has competed in two Olympic Games. Competing in Melbourne will take her Commonwealth Games tally to four since 1994, although she is yet to pick up a medal.
Jacqueline Edwards of the Bahamas will also be one of the forces of the competition. Edwards has competed in three Commonwealth Games and both the Sydney and Athens Olympics.
The women’s Long Jump qualifying rounds will be started at 12pm today.
