Reigning Synchronised Swimming champions Canada will be pinning their hopes of continuing their unbeaten streak at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon.

Synchro Canada has named her in both the solo and duet events after 14 swimmers took place in selection trials in Montreal.

Ms Boudreau-Gagnon, who last year placed 6th in the solo event at the FINA World Aquatics Championships, scored 94.500 out of a possible 100.

She and partner Isabelle Rampling also posted a score of 94.500, and the pair will head to Melbourne for their first Commonwealth Games and first international event as a duet.

“Today has been a great day,” said Ms Boudreau-Gagnon. “I never thought I would win both solo and duet events. Isabelle and I only started working on our duet together two months ago and we really jived today. The Commonwealth Games are very important for winning medals and if we medal, it will be the highlight of our careers.”

The Canadian team has claimed the gold in Synchronised Swimming at every games since it was introduced in Edinburgh in 1986.

The swimmers will be accompanied by two coaches – one for the solo and one for the duet events – who also happen to be sisters.

Duet coach Julie Sauvé, who coached Olympic gold medallist Sylvie Fréchette to gold at the 1986 and 1990 Commonwealth Games, will join her sister, solo coach Diane, in Melbourne in March.

“Although this is the first event that Marie-Pier and Isabelle swam together as a duet, I believe that they will do great things for Canada,“ said Julie Sauvé. ”The Commonwealth Games will be a great opportunity for Synchro to win some medals.”

The Commonwealth Games Synchronised Swimming Competition will take place at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre (MSAC) on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March.
