Canada's 1m Springboard
Games champion, Blythe Hartley.
The Women’s 1m Springboard final has been won by Canadian Blyth Hartley, with a total of 644.65 points from the final and preliminary rounds.
Silver and bronze medals were awarded to Australian’s Sharleen Stratton, with 596.45 points, and Kathryn Blackshaw, with 544.40 points.
Hartley went into the Final as favourite with an 18.50 point advantage ahead of second-placed Stratton.
"I am very happy I could compete for Canada, the Australian girls did a great job,” said Hartley.
“I could feel pressure from Sharleen because I knew she was diving well. I just wanted to perform steady and do what I do."
In the lead up to tonight’s dives, Hartley performed a reverse one-and-a-half somersault with a one-and-a-half twist, scoring an impressive 68.90 points to give her a total of 316.15 points.
Stratton scored 62.40 on the same dive, leaving her with a total of 297.65. The high scores gave Hartley and Stratton a commanding lead, making it difficult for other competitors to catch them.
Hartley won the World Championship in Japan in 2001, breaking the dominance of Chinese divers. She defended her title four years later at the Montreal World Championships.
Her Commonwealth Games history is just as impressive, with silver medals at both the Kuala Lumpur and Manchester Games in the Women's 1m Springboard.
A former gymnast, Hartley took up diving at 11, and by 14 had already won her first senior national title. Although she is based in Montreal, Hartley studies at the University of California.
Blackshaw has had a busy schedule at the Games, having competed in the 3m Springboard Individual and Pairs events. She will also compete in the 3m Springboard Preliminary Final on Saturday morning.
"This morning I wasn't so confident, I was a little bit shaky," said Blackshaw. "But I was pretty happy with my performance."
