Australia's diving duo Bree Cole and Sharleen Stratton springboard to gold.
Australian diving duo Bree Cole and Sharleen Stratton won the first gold medal in diving today in convincing style in the Women's Synchronised 3m Springboard Final.
The Brisbane-based pair finished with a score of 296.07 points, ahead of Canada's Melanie Rinaldi and Rebecca Barras with 273.72 points and England's Tandi Indergaard and Hayley Sage taking home the bronze with 270.63 points.
Australia's second Women's team diver Chantelle Newbery and her last-minute partner Kathryn Blackshaw lost out on a bronze medal with a disappointing final dive.
"We have been working really hard for this and we knew if we trained like normal we could get a gold medal," Cole said after her win.
Meanwhile in the Men's 1m Springboard Preliminary heats, World Champion Canadian diver Alexandre Despatie has dominated the competition. Despatie led after each round of the competition, finishing with a total of 425.15 points.
"It was very consistent, so now I have room to do better tonight," said Despatie.
"I love Australia, it’s the fifth time I've been, it’s a country I love. It’s a bit like home but warmer. It's such a great place."
Malaysia's Ken Nee Yeoh, whose goal is to win his country's first Diving medal, looks a strong chance after qualifying second in 421.05.
Manchester 2002 bronze medallist Steven Barnett of Australia qualified third on 377.10, followed by England's Peter Waterfield with 369.35 points.
"The first couple in the round were a bit shaky, but the last three were a bit better," said Englishman Waterfield on his performance.
