John's parents enrolled him in Little Athletics when he was seven to get rid of excess energy.

A former long jumper, John made the move from Perth to Sydney in the winter of 2002 to train in the Michael Khmel sprint squad.

His hero is Australian runner Peter Norman, who 37 years ago won silver in the 200m at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Norman still holds the Australian 200m record.
