Matt started swimming when he was three years old and has since been awarded the Centenary Medal and the VIS Award of Excellence.

Classified as Australia's leading Backstroke exponent, Matt again won the Backstroke treble at the 2005 Telstra Trials.

At the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Matt became only the fourth Australian since 1900 to win an Olympic medal in Backstroke.

In his debut Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Matt became a triple gold medallist with victories in the 50m and 100m Backstroke, as well as the 4 x 100m medley relay.
