Before first going to the Australian Championships, John's principal gave him a piece of ribbon. The ribbon was the same length as the distance between 'Jumping' Jai Taurima's Sydney 2000 Silver medal winning jump and John's own PB.

One of his coaches, Fred O'Connor, is over eighty years old and is a veteran of athletics.

John once shared a room with Kyle Vander-Kyup at the Grand Prix meet.
