Steve jumped a towering 5.80m in the final of the Pole Vault, winning himself a gold medal and breaking the Games record.

Steven played Australian Rules to a high level before focusing on pole vault.

His father, Bill, represented Australia in the 400m, 400m Hurdles, 800m and 4x400m in 1974

His mother Erica Hooker nee Nixon was a 1972 Olympian and a Commonwealth Games long jump silver medallist she competed in 1974 and 1978.

Steven just missed out on a pole vault medal at the World Junior Championships in 2000, finishing fourth.

In 2005 he was named the City of Whitehorse Athlete of the Year after finishing 2005 with a personal best of 5.87 metres which broke a long-standing Victorian record.
