Dean trains at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Auckland and has been in a competitive squad since he was about eight years old.

Dean has won eight consecutive National Championships in the 100m, 200m and 400m medley events and has also added the 100m breaststroke title.

At the Jomner North Harbour Sporting Excellence Awards in 2005, Dean picked up the Spencer On Byron Hotel Sportsman of the Year award.
