Achraf grew up in Morocco where, in 1998, he received an invitation from the Moroccan National Team to join the best athletes of the country.

I began Athletics in Casablanca, in 1998. I was visiting my uncle and out of nowhere, one of his guard dogs broke loose from his chain and began to charge towards me. This forced me to sprint 200m as fast as I could to escape the furious dog. After watching me outrun the dog, my uncle strongly suggested that I join a track and field club.
