Other James began shooting in 1970, choosing the sport because it was a competitive sport he could perform well in despite being thin and not very muscular. He says he has stayed with the sport because he has been able to be competitive even into his late 40's.

James' personal goal for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games is to win a medal in the fullbore pairs and single events.

He is coached by Sandy Peden and trains at the British Columbia Rifle Association.

His sporting goal beyond Melbourne is to win the Grand in Bisley. His personal best results were winning the Queen's Prize, Bisley 2005 and a Gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
