Kelly played netball for Hampshire Schools.

Although a very strong favourite for the gold medal, Kelly is not taking it lightly. "You still have to go out there and do the job. I hope I can do just that."

With the departure last year of Charles van Commenee, the coach who took her from 57th in the world to an Olympic medal, Sotherton's career is now supervised by a squad of at least six coaches. It was her job to organise them and her disappointing fifth at last year's World Championships in Helsinki suggested the system needed change. "We have fine-tuned my coaching this winter," she said. "My performances suggest it's working much better."
