Mike began shooting in 1976 as a junior and quickly progressed to the National Junior Training Squad. Medals and records followed and he attained a reserve position for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In 1999, Mike won silver for 50m prone at the European championships in Bordeaux - and that earned him a quota place for Great Britain at the Sydney games. The following year, he won another silver at a World Cup event in Milan and then individual gold in Atlanta with a new British record of 597ex-600 plus 103.9 in the final. Although Sydney did not earn Mike medal success, the following year he achieved another British record - he shot a perfect 600ex-600 in a National Squad trial at Appleton, near Warrington, the first person to achieve this in competition.
