Melbourne 2006 Media Services Operational Arrangements - April 2005

Welcome to the second edition of the Media Services information web page for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

With less than 1 year to go until the Opening Ceremony, I'm sure your planning is moving forward with great momentum. In the meantime, we aim to keep you informed of all operational matters that will impact your planning schedule for the Games.

ACCOMMODATION - COMMONWEALTH GAMES TRAVEL OFFICE

The Commonwealth Games Travel Office (CGTO) has finalised its negotiations with media hotels and is expecting to release these options via the CGTO website, early April. An email will be sent to our Media distribution list advising of the website launch and the Media Access Code required to make a reservation. Media who have not been notified of the Media Access Code should contact the CGTO to receive the access code.

There will be four designated media hotels, all within walking distance from the Main Press Centre. Prices start from AU$103 per room per night for budget accommodation through to AU$269 per room per night for superior style accommodation. Apartment options are also available.

ACCREDITATION

Application for Accreditation (AFAs)

Please be advised that the issue of and return deadlines for Accreditation Applications have changed. The revised dates are:

Application for accreditation forms issued by 10 July 2005.
Return of application deadline extended to 7 November 2005.

Expressions of Interest from Media to cover the Games

Expressions of interest are being accepted from all press and photographic media and non-rights holding broadcasters. You must include in a fax or email:
  • Organisation Name
  • Organisation Address
  • Organisation Point of Contact
  • Point of Contact Details (phone, e-mail address)
For international media the above should be sent to Lauren Pritchard or fax +613 9613 2000.

For Australian media we are currently directing requests for media accreditation through to the Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA). Please send your request to the ACGA or fax 03 9654 7311.

A list of key dates pertaining to Accreditation for Media categories are:

MAIN PRESS CENTRE

The Main Press Centre will operate from 5 March until 29 March with the hours of operation still to be determined.

Private Office Space

The Rate Card team encourages you to respond quickly to book your office space within the MPC for your preferred location. The office space is in modules of 20 metres square.

Expressions of Interest can be sent to Michelle Simmons advising the anticipated number of offices you may require.

RATE CARD

We are pleased to announce the preliminary Rate Card is now available. A copy of the Rate Card will be sent to those of you who are already on our distribution list via email, in the form of a PDF file. If you have not received this email by Monday 4 April 2005 and would like to obtain a copy of the Rate Card please contact us or fax +613 9613 2000 with your details so a copy can be emailed, faxed or posted to you.

The Rate Card Catalogue includes a list of the products and services available for rent or purchase, including consumables, during the Games and will also be a comprehensive guide of the M2006 Procurement departments policies and procedures for ordering electronically and manually, and conditions associated with rate card.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES VENUES

The competition venues listed below will each have a Venue Media Centre to cater for the accredited written and photographic press covering the Games.

The capacity of the Venue Media Centres will vary according to the size of the venue.

Venue Location
Docklands Precinct The venue for Walks is approximately 1km west of the city centre
Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) The venue for both Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Athletics and the start and finish of the Marathon is approximately 2km east of the city centre
Melbourne Exhibition Centre The venue for the Main Press Centre, Badminton, Boxing and Weightlifting is directly south-west of the city centre
Melbourne Gun Club (Lilydale) The venue for Clay Target Shooting is approximately 50km north-east of the city centre
Melbourne International Shooting Club The venue for Small Bore and Pistol Shooting is approximately 4km south-west of the city centre
Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre (MSAC) The venue for Aquatics, Squash and Table Tennis is approximately 3km south of the city centre
Multi Purpose Venue - Melbourne Park The venue for the Track Cycling, Basketball Finals and Netball Finals is approximately 2km east of the city centre and 5 minutes walk from the MCG
Regional Basketball Ballarat (approximately 100km west of the city centre); Bendigo (approximately 130km north-west of the city centre); Geelong (approximately 75km south-west of the city centre); Traralgon (approximately 160km east of the city centre)
Rod Laver Arena The venue for Gymnastics is approximately 2km east of the city centre and 5 minutes walk from the MCG
Royal Botanic Gardens Circuit The venue for the Road Cycling event is approximately 2.5km south-east of the city centre
State Lawn Bowls The venue for Lawn Bowls is approximately 6.5km north-east of the city centre
State Mountain Bike Course (Lysterfield Park) The venue for Mountain Bike Cycling is approximately 50km east of the city centre
State Netball Hockey Centre The venue for Netball preliminaries and Hockey is approximately 3km north of the city centre
St Kilda Foreshore The venue for the Triathlon is approximately 5km south of the city centre
Telstra Dome The venue for Rugby 7s is directly west on the edge of the city centre
Wellsford Rifle Range (Bendigo) The venue for Full Bore Shooting is approximately 130km north-west of the city centre
