Useful information
Your team
Welcome to the ninth edition of the Media Services information web page for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Melbourne is currently celebrating the annual Spring Racing Carnival including the internationally celebrated Melbourne Cup which takes place in early November.
Celebrations for the Games continue across the Commonwealth with the Queen’s Baton Relay. During November the baton visits Tonga and the Solomon Islands before heading south to the isolated Australian Antarctic territory, where it will spend the early part of December. The success of this international journey to date ensures Melbourne is well placed to deliver a truly great Commonwealth Games.
Our professional Media Services and Publicity teams look forward to continue assisting you with your preparation for the Games.
Thank you for your support to date and we look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne, the world’s most liveable city in March 2006.

POLICIES
News Access Policies
The Commonwealth Games Arrangements Act 2001 provides in summary that a person must not broadcast telecast or transmit any sound or image of a Commonwealth Games event, or make any sound recording or film television, video or digital recording of a Commonwealth Games event for profit or gain unless it has been authorised by Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation (M2006) or unless a determination has been made that an authorisation is not required.
International copyright law also covers television broadcasts and sound broadcasts of Commonwealth Games events. Copyright may be infringed by making a film or other copy of the visual images comprised in a television broadcast, by making a recording or other copy of the sounds comprised in a television or sound broadcast, or by re-broadcasting or otherwise communicating to the public a television or sound broadcast.
M2006 is intending to make a determination that authorisation is not required in relation to certain Commonwealth Games events, including the Queens Baton Relay and the Cultural Program (except for 7pm-12pm on March 15 2006). Copies of the determination will be available from M2006 once made.
M2006 will authorise broadcasting either through its contractual arrangements with rights-holders, or through news access rules for non-rights holders. Separate news access rules will apply for television, radio, and mobile and internet both for Australia and international territories. Where appropriate, M2006 may authorise supplemental rules for various organisations.
The standard Australian television and radio rules have been finalised, and can be accessed by viewing the
News Access Policies
on this website.
The acceptance of these rules does not automatically permit accreditation.
For media accreditation enquiries, please
email Kate White
.
For enquiries on the access rules, please

TOURISM
Sovereign Hill
Sovereign Hill, a living museum at Ballarat, 115km west of Melbourne, tells the story of the discovery of gold in Ballarat between 1851 and 1861 with costumed staff, street theatre and a selection of 1850s working trades people adding to this unique attraction.
Sovereign Hill has developed a new
Gold Mountain Tour
offering the best of Sovereign Hill's gold experiences and allowing visitors to be swept up in the excitement of gold fever.
The package includes a fully-guided, 90-minute gold tour. As part of this special experience, visitors meet and chat with costumed characters and take unique souvenir photographs, hold beautiful gold nuggets and see the Gold Museum’s million dollar gold display. Groups also have the option to go underground on a Gold Mine Adventure or witness an amazing $50,000 Gold Pour.
With on-site accommodation, Sovereign Hill also offers both a day and night time experience. Blood on the Southern Cross, a spectacular sound and light show about the Eureka Rebellion tells the story of Australia’s only civil uprising between goldminers and government forces.
Visit the Sovereign Hill Website
for more information.
Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art Gallery
Enjoy a fascinating insight into the world’s oldest continuous surviving culture at Ballarat’s new multi million dollar world class Aboriginal arts and culture centre.
The Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art Gallery (a place of creation) is situated next to Sovereign Hill and features a museum, café, culture/keeping place, art gallery, gift shop, multimedia and performance theatres and an environmental centre.
Aboriginal owned and operated by the local Ballarat community the centre presents a fascinating discovery and experience of Aboriginal life - specifically the unique culture of the Wathaurong tribal group. One of the complex’s major attractions is the Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art Gallery which is home to high quality authentic arts and crafts painted by community members and artists from Aboriginal Australia. Ballarat Fine Art Gallery
Built in 1884, the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery is Australia's oldest and largest regional gallery. The collection spans early colonial works through to contemporary art, with collections of works on paper, decorative arts, costume and sculpture. Works from the Heidelberg School, and prints dating from Captain Cook's voyages to the present day are included. The Gallery also houses the original Eureka Flag, an important gold fields collection and Lindsay Family works.
The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery has housed the Eureka Flag since November 1895. The flag is an important historical relic, symbolising Australia's only armed rebellion in 1854 on the Victorian goldfields that lasted just six days. The Eureka Flag is displayed in its own gallery alongside a changing display of related work including a large collection of watercolours by S.T. Gill. The Gallery has an active public program of major exhibitions and community based exhibitions as well as weekly lunchtime talks organised by the Gallery Guides. Services and facilities include free guided tours, wheelchair access and a cafe. The Gallery's Education Officer provides a special support service for schools.
