Interflora puts the petal to the metal as Official Games Provider

Interflora, Australia’s largest florist network, was today announced as the Official Florist for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Appointed to deliver the more than 1,300 bouquets presented to athletes during each of the medal ceremonies, Interflora’s first initiative has been to engage its Australia-wide member network in a competition to design the official medal presentation bouquet.

The competition, open to all Interflora members, their staff and all accredited Interflora judges, states that:
  • Florists must ensure the bouquet is attractive, high quality and able to withstand multiple handling
  • Florists have a free choice of flowers and foliage, however fresh flowers must be used and must predominate
  • Florists are encouraged to consider incorporating Australian native flowers, foliages and/or grasses – Australian native nuts and bark can also be used
  • Noxious weeds on the other hand, are disallowed, as are sharp materials such as tall xanthorrhea grass, stick frames or such which could cause eye or other injuries to athletes or presenters
Interflora CEO, Garry Korn, said over the past four weeks design submissions have been received from florists from as far afield as Exmouth in far north Western Australia, to local florists in suburban Melbourne.

“What’s particularly gratifying to see is that we’ve received submissions not only from the industry’s high profile floral designers, but there have been a number of lesser-known Interflora florists who have decided to give it a go as well,” Mr Korn said.

“It’s great to see that our members are both excited and supportive of Interflora’s sponsorship of the Games and that being a part of Melbourne 2006 is something that everybody wants a chance to do.”

Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games CEO, Mr John Harnden, said he was delighted with the addition of Interflora to the Games Sponsor Family.

“We are thrilled to welcome Interflora as an Official Provider for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games,” Mr Harnden said.

“We’re very much looking forward to seeing the winning bouquet presented to the medal winning athletes at Games time.”

A number of short-listed bouquet designs will be presented for review by the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee over the coming weeks, with the winning design announced late in December.

Up for grabs are tickets to the finals and presentation ceremony of a sporting event at Games time, and therefore the opportunity for the winning florist to see their design being presented.

According to Garry Korn, Interflora CEO, “The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will provide the perfect platform for Interflora to showcase its brand and product within a fitting celebratory environment.

“For centuries, flowers have played an important role in celebrating various human endeavours, they have a long association with being awarded to those who are victorious, whether on a sports field or in a political or cultural arena.”

Interflora will also supply bouquets for visiting VIP’s as well as floral arrangements in all Melbourne 2006 VIP lounges.

The Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness 4500 elite athletes from 71 nations taking part in the XVIII Commonwealth Games to be held from 15-26 March 2006.
