Statement from M2006 on 'God Save The Queen'

The Chairman of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, Ron Walker, today re-iterated the Organising Committee’s position on the Royal Anthem and the Opening Ceremony.

Mr Walker said the creative of the Opening Ceremony had been determined by the Organising Committee months ago, in consultation with Buckingham Palace - and nothing has changed.

“As Andrew Walsh confirmed this morning on Melbourne radio, eight bars of the Royal Anthem will be included as part of a simple and elegant musical tribute to the Queen,” Mr Walker said.

“It will be performed by legendary soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Chorale and national children’s choir Gondwana Voices.

“The Royal Anthem will not be sung in its entirety. That decision was made in consultation with Buckingham Palace officials, who support that decision.

“The Australian national anthem will be performed in its entirety as is appropriate according to the constitution of the Commonwealth Games Federation.”
