Melbourne, Victoria and Australia
The greatest athletes of the age coming together to compete, to clash, to test their skills and muscles and nerve against their peers. Records will be broken. Heroes will be acknowledged. Hopes will be dashed. Champions will rise and fall. And in 2006 it will happen in Melbourne, one of the world’s greatest sporting cities.
There are only a handful of global sporting events that allow us to witness moments of sporting magic being played out across a vast and diverse range of disciplines. The Commonwealth Games offers elite sporting competition everywhere you look – among individuals or teams, chasing balls, passing batons, in water, on land and in the air.
The Commonwealth Games enjoys a breathtaking history of competition rising to remarkable heights. Who could forget the ‘Miracle Mile’, the epic battle in Vancouver, 1954, between Roger Bannister and John Landy, the only two sub-four-minute milers in history? Think of Australia’s Dawn Fraser winning four gold medals at Perth in 1962. Or when Scottish sprinter Allen Wells, the reigning 100 metre Olympic champion, took on Englishman Mike McFarlane in the 200 metres final in Brisbane, 1982, going stride for stride until finishing with the only dead heat for the gold medal in major championship history.
If history is any guide, Melbourne 2006 will add its own stories to this pantheon of memorable sporting moments. And those stories will unfold in the world’s most liveable city, before some of its most passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable sports fans.
It’s a heady combination: one of the world’s great sporting events being held in one of the world’s great sporting cities. With athletes, officials and fans all gathering in Melbourne, the 2006 Games will celebrate the unifying power of sport and hail those who have joined in the race to be crowned the best in the Commonwealth.
