England’s fastest men will get a chance to warm-up against their Australian rivals in a sprint battle set to welcome the return of athletics to the MCG for the first time in 50 years. Australia is looking to build on the growing success of its gymnastics team by naming a young squad for the Commonwealth Games. Victorian women celebrating their 80th birthday in 2006 are being offered the unique chance to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in a reception at the MCG immediately prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Games. British Athletics great Daley Thompson has been called in to help inspire an experienced New Zealand Track and Field team. Husband and wife Diving combination of Robert and Chantelle Newbery have both moved closer to Commonwealth Games selection with the couple claiming victory in their respective finals at the Australian Open Diving Championships. Canada’s triathletes heading to Games will warm up with a run at the Hobart Oceania Cup Triathlon on February 19 with all of Australia’s representatives and most of the New Zealand team out on the course. Australia has named a men’s Hockey team heavy on experience, and a women’s team built around young players to make the gold medal challenge in Melbourne. Some of the Commonwealth’s top female weightlifters have issued a strong challenge for both their competitors and Commonwealth records in March with an intense training regime at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in Samoa. Australia’s largest ever Athletics team, comprising 123 athletes in total, will head to Melbourne in March looking for Games gold on the Track and Field. On naming its team, and with strong competitors from Malaysia, India, England, Canada, Nauru and the Cook Islands, the Australian team will have it tough in Melbourne.
