Public transport the best bet

With thousands of extra
services and free travel with
a Games ticket, public
transport will be the best way
to get around at Games time.

Melbourne’s public transport system will be the best way to get around when the Games hit town, with an extra 30,000 services added to meet increased demand.

The biggest event in Victoria's history will see increased competition at train platforms, bus stations and tram stops, but the extra services will ensure spectators can still make their ways from venue to venue easily.

In addition, spectators will be offered free public transport on the day their Games tickets are valid. With no parking at most Games venues, public transport will be the way to go. Trams and train timetables have been extended until 1:15am, so revellers will be able to enjoy the celebrations and Festival Melbourne 2006 events before heading home.

There will also be altered traffic conditions in Melbourne, with clearly marked blue traffic lanes and parking restrictions throughout the city for the exclusive use of Games transport and emergency vehicles. Drivers are urged to steer clear of the blue lanes and help get our athletes to the events on time.
With more traffic changes and busier roads likely, as well as fines for parking or travelling in the Exclusive Games Lanes, drivers should plan ahead and consider alternative routes or jump on the extra public transport services. Games organisers suggest you avoid travelling in peak times, minimise travel through the CBD if possible, avoid Games areas, plan your journey and remember it will take longer to get around.

It'll be busy. But plan ahead, leave plenty of time and enjoy the ride. And the Games.
