Victorian Government - host government

The Victorian Government is contributing a total of $697m to the Games. The Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination (OCGC) in the Department for Victorian Communities, is working with the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation to deliver the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games which will be the largest event in Victoria's history.

Cities and States around the world have found that hosting the Commonwealth Games is a defining moment in their evolution.

OCGC is committed to ensuring that hosting the Games creates lasting benefits through better infrastructure, stronger communities and a healthier environment.

Major Games projects include the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) redevelopment, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (Stage 2) expansion project including a new competition pool, the State Lawn Bowls Centre built in partnership with the City of Darebin, the State Mountain Bike Course at Lysterfield and the Yarra Pedestrian Bridge that will link Birrarung Marr and the MCG.

Some of the legacy programs developed by OCGC include
  • Equal First - the Games accessibility strategy.
  • Getting Involved - a guide for local governments to celebrate the Games.
  • Games Environment Strategy.
  • Adopt a second team - an initiative to match every Victorian municipality with another Commonwealth nation.
  • Games Education Program.
