Environment Program

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games aims to be as good for the environment as it is for the rest of Victoria.
There are three key strategies for achieving this:
  • Waterwise - using water-efficient appliances, collecting stormwater and recycling wastewater at major Games venues
  • Carbon neutral - reducing energy consumption, increasing public transport use and planting trees to act as carbon sponges
  • Low waste - discouraging littering and reducing waste that goes to landfill by recycling more.

The Victorian Government has released the interim Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Environment Report Card, which shows new environmental benchmarks will be met. To download a copy of this report visit the Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination's website.

The release of the Environment Report Card means that the vision to make the Games Water Wise, Carbon Neutral and Low Waste is well on the way to becoming reality. After the Games, an independently prepared Environment Report Card will present a detailed assessment of the Government’s environmental achievements.
