Introduction

The Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village is located on a 20ha site in the prestigious inner suburb of Parkville. The Village site is only 20 minutes from Melbourne Airport, nine minutes to the city centre and less than 15 minutes to all city venues.

The site is adjacent to Royal Park which offers a blend of open space, mature trees, sporting facilities and a major visitor attraction - Melbourne Zoo.

The Village will be a new housing development incorporating high-standard urban design and facilities.

For athletes and team officials, the location, design and parkland setting make the Village a home away from home without equal.

Access and transport

The site is only 3km from the city centre by car or bus, and is accessible by train and tram, with convenient stops and stations throughout. A special bus terminal provides for transport to competition and training venues.

The Village site is 20 minutes by expressway from Tullamarine International Airport, nine minutes to the city and less than 15 minutes to all city Games venues.

Residential zone

Accommodation is available for up to 6,000 athletes and team officials in all-new buildings in the Village, designed and built to a standard commensurate with their ultimate sale as high quality, inner urban dwellings in a new and sophisticated marketplace.

The residential zone is separated via security from the remainder of the Village with access limited to athletes, officials, accredited visitors and staff.

Through the 'low rise' nature, the accommodation will provide easy access to disabled athletes and officials. The scheme allows for 75 per cent of residents to be housed in permanent dwellings and 25 per cent in relocatable/portable structures.

Basic standards include:

Fully equipped bathroom facilities at a ratio of no less than one bathroom per five persons.
Lockable storage for personal effects.
Teams are located in adjoining areas and appropriate officials will be housed integrally.
The Village incorporates a variety of pedestrianised streets and open spaces, utilising the existing mature vegetation on the site to provide a leafy atmosphere and encourage interaction in the public areas and formal spaces. It provides clear links to the International Zone, adjacent recreational facilities in Royal Park and transport routes to the centre of the City of Melbourne.

International zone

The international zone is an area still within the bounds of the Village that has access rules that allow media and accredited public etc to enter. The international zone utilises existing modern buildings on the site, supplemented by new structures to provide the following new facilities:

Administration centre: Games Transport Office, featuring secure meeting rooms and all conference facilities including teleconference, fax, Internet and secretarial services.
Medical Centre, including a physiotherapy ward and consulting rooms (it should be noted that some of Melbourne's major health services, including dental and physiotherapy are in hospitals located 1km across the adjacent Royal Park).
Central dining area, including a seating capacity of approximately 3,000 and a kitchen capable of providing 20,000 meals per day.

Press centre

A fully-equipped press centre is incorporated into the central complex, including interview rooms and press offices. The press centre is equipped with communication systems appropriate to major networks and individual reporters.
