Ceremonies Cast Application Information

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be spectacular events incorporating the talents of some of Australia’s finest professional performers as well as many talented and committed cast members. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will celebrate, promote and showcase Australia, its people and its role in the Commonwealth and the world. The Australian Government is proud to be funding the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Being chosen to be a performer in the Opening or Closing Ceremonies is an honour requiring dedication and commitment to the challenge of creating such Australian Government logo.large scale events. The information found here will answer many of your questions about why, when and how to apply to become a Melbourne 2006 Ceremonies cast member.

The staging of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games is a huge task, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be a spectacular beginning and end to eleven days of elite sporting competition.

Victorian Government logo.The Ceremonies will be one of the most exciting and creative experiences ever staged in Australia. Expectations will be high for participants and spectators alike, as the many symbols and messages of the Games translate into the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

And now you have the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful experience, by applying to audition for the Ceremonies.

Application and audition process

Online applications to be a volunteer Ceremonies Cast member have now closed.

Auditions conclude on Sunday 28th August 2005.

If you would like to apply for an audition, please contact the Ceremonies Casting Team on 1300 002 006 by 12 noon on Friday 26th August 2005. Applications will not be accepted after this time.

Please note, applicants must be 15 years of age or over by 1st January 2006.

All individuals who audition will be notified whether they have been successful in obtaining a role in the Ceremonies cast by Monday 10 October 2005.

Keeping in touch

Your passion and enthusiasm are important aspects of your role as a Ceremonies cast member however we request your patience with the audition and rehearsal process.

The primary method of communication from the Ceremonies Program will be via email. We ask all cast members to check their email at 3 set times a week to receive any updates. Calling us outside of these times to ask questions unfortunately will only slow this process. Should you have a question to ask us, please check your email first to see if the answer lies there.

Should you genuinely be unable to communicate via email, please call 1300 00 2006 and request the Ceremonies Program. Callers who are Deaf or who have a hearing impairment or a speech / communication impairment may call through the National Relay Service using a TTY (text phone) or computer with a modem by dialling 133 677 and quoting 1300 00 2006.

What are we looking for in a Ceremonies performer

  • Flexibility, reliability, a positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Minimum age – you must be 18 years of age on or before 1 January 2006
  • Availability for the rehearsal and performance period
  • A willingness to perform whichever role you are offered, for example, as part of a mass choreography sequence or as a featured performer
  • Agreement to abide by all accreditation and registration requirements
  • Consent to police security checks
  • Comply with all key policies regarding your behaviour, presentation and involvement as a Ceremonies performer
  • Speak and understand English
  • A willingness to reside within 1 hour of rehearsal venues between 1 January and 26 March 2006
  • A keen interest or experience in the Entertainment Industry

Important information – general

  • The Melbourne 2006 Ceremonies Cast Application Form must be completed in full. Please note prompt applications are encouraged as a high demand for cast places is anticipated.
  • It is anticipated that cast will perform in either the Opening or the Closing Ceremony, not both.
  • Transport, housing and/or compensation will not be provided for Ceremonies performers. No expenses incurred by Ceremonies performers will be reimbursed.
  • Ceremonies performers will not have access to Ceremonies tickets and will not be able to watch the Ceremonies when not performing.
  • The Melbourne 2006 Ceremonies cast is not a part of Melbourne 2006 Volunteer Program. As such, different entitlements and recognition will exist.
  • The Opening Ceremony is 15 March 2006.
  • The Closing Ceremony is 26 March 2006.

Important information - auditions

  • There will be a limited number of audition sessions.
  • All applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have secured an audition within seven working days of their application being lodged.
  • Audition notifications will be via email.
  • Please note submitting an application does not guarantee an audition place. Similarly, securing an audition place does not guarantee a place in the Opening or Closing Ceremony.
  • Auditions will take place between Wednesday 10 and Sunday 28 August 2005.
  • To allow effective time management, you will be asked to identify your preferred audition time.
  • Please be aware that there is no guarantee that you will receive your preferred time and that audition times will not be rescheduled.
  • During the audition you will be taught a simple routine and perform as part of a group, however your individual performance will be graded.
  • Plan on being in the audition process for approximately 3 hours.

Important information - rehearsals

  • While some rehearsals will start in October 2005, the main rehearsal period will be from January to March 2006.
  • Rehearsals will be a minimum of 3 hours in duration.
  • You must be prepared to commit 3 to 4 rehearsal sessions per week during January and February.
  • The Rehearsal venues are located in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Public transport routes will be forwarded at a later date. You will be required to make your own way to rehearsals. Parking at the venue will not be provided.
  • Rehearsals during this time may be scheduled: Weekdays Afternoon and Evening, Weekends Morning, Afternoon and Evening
  • Rehearsals may be scheduled on public holidays.
  • The following calendar shows the final rehearsals dates during March 2006. Availability on these days will be required during the day and the evening.

Accessibility logoRehearsals are every day during March 2006 except Friday 3 March, Monday 6 March, Thursday 9 March, Tuesday 14 March, Thursday 16 March, Monday 20 March to Wednesday 22 March, and Friday 24 March.

  • Flexibility will be required as rehearsals may not be scheduled at the same time each week. Rehearsals will also be held outdoors in all types of weather.

What is the security check?

All Ceremonies Cast will be required to undergo a security screening check. The security check will search for and identify criminal history information of a Ceremonies cast applicant. However, a recorded conviction will not automatically determine the outcome of an application. Each Ceremonies cast application will be assessed on its merits. At the audition you will be required to show photographic identification and provide a completed and signed consent form for us to conduct the security check.
